Henry S. Ensher serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Afghanistan and Central Asia for the US State Department. He joined the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs in October 2, 2017. Previously, he was a senior advisor in the Human Resources Career Development and Assignments office.

His other assignments include Chief of Mission at the US Mission to International Organizations in Vienna; Ambassador of the United States to Algeria; Senior Civilian Representative-South at Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan; Director of the Office of Afghanistan Affairs; Political Advisor at Central Command; Chair of Near East and North Africa Area Studies and Coordinator for Iraq and Afghanistan Provincial Reconstruction Team training at the Foreign Service Institute; Deputy Political Counselor in Baghdad, Iraq; and Governance Coordinator in Qadisiyah Province, Iraq.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
